Ulziikhishig's profession is meat technologist and she had worked for “Makh Impex” company for 21 years. But in 2002 she had to quit the job due to a health problem. Since then, she decided to start her own business and began sewing clothes. She usually made t-shirts, undervests, and long underwears. Beginning from 2004, she started producing felt products. But the sales were not good and she explored different selling opportunities. At that time she read a newspaper issued by GER Initiative and learned about its services. Soon after, Ulziikhishig started participating trade fairs organized by GER actively and received consulting and training on promoting and marketing her products.

Three years ago, B. Tsetsegdelger, a resident of Bulgan, Bulgan aimag, was engaged in a small business of selling firewood. At the same time, she was thinking of growing vegetables to have some more income as well as have safe and healthy food for the household needs. Right around that time, GER Initiative opened its operation in Bulgan aimag.

Tsendbaatar, a resident of Choibalsan, Dornod, makes mops and brooms at his home and sells them at local market. After becoming a client of GER in October 2006, Tsendbaatar was linked with the local electric company to supply 100 brooms a month. At first, he didn’t have enough capital to fulfill the order so GER helped him to borrow raw materials from one of its clients. Tsendbaatar successfully completed the order and paid back his debt. Since then his business grew. GER disbursed him two loans to finance the purchase of belt-saw and later the workplace. Additionally, Tsendbaatar attended business trainings and purchased accounting booklets which helped him to track income and expenses.

B.Saran has been running a dairy farm business since 2005. The client supplies the market with milk all year around as well as with beef in spring and autumn. When she came to GER Initiative in September 2007, she was in need of a fund to increase number of her breeding herd and complete her unfinished cow shelter. She had applied for bank loan, but she was unable to get enough funding because of lack of sufficient collateral.

Oyunbold, a resident of Dornod aimag, used to work for a military and she was retired in 1992. At that time, she had an opportunity to attend a felt processing training. During the training, she was surprised to see how regular sheep wool can be turned into nice products. After the training, she started making felt products as well as teaching people. She has trained over 200 people since she became a trainer.

Businesses have to deal with new problems as their businesses expand
In 2004, Oyun started baking breads at her home and selling them to local stores. Sales were good which encouraged her start the business officially in 2005 with one employee and a small oven. She baked her bread using Buriyat technology which made the bread tastier. The business grew quickly and by October 2006, she already had her own workspace and employed eight people. At that time, Oyun became a client of GER Initiative. As the business expanded, she faced problems and issues that were unknown to her and she needed help. Managing many employees, having them work stable and keeping the cost down were examples of her problems.

Otgongerel opened a small kiosk in 2003 with the help of her family. Everyone in her family supported the business and worked hard together. At the time, they were living in rented apartment and wanted to have their own place to live in. Although they were saving small amount of money, it wasn’t enough to purchase an apartment as the business also needed the money. Banks rejected their loan request due to lack of collateral.

Ten women in Baganuur, a remote district of Ulaanbaatar, established “Narlag” as a community bank or cash saving group in December 2005. Members of the group were mostly unemployed women with no income source. After enrolling two of the members to felt production training jointly organized by GER Initiative and Employment office, the group decided to start a felt production business. During the time, banks had no loan product for business groups so GER provided them a business group loan from its USDA funded Capital Augmentation Fund. Moreover, the group was linked with a GER client who makes wool combing machines which helped them purchase necessary equipments and start their business.
